Verna Mae Kilpatrick's Obituary
Verna Mae Brown (Stewart, Kilpatrick) was born in Colorado City, Texas on July 22nd 1929 to Lillie Tarter Brown and Overton Brown. She had five siblings; Malloy, Lillie Faye, Romell, James Ray and Joyce Ruth. Verna’s mother, Lillie, died an untimely death due to childbirth complications when Romell was born, leaving the three young girls and one boy without a mother when they were very young. Overton eventually remarried.
Some of Verna’s earliest memories surrounded the Great Depression Era, when her family served as migrant farm workers. Her mother would cook dinner in a cast iron pot over an open campfire. She had so many memories and stories for a listening ear. Verna spent most of her childhood in Quanah, Texas where she went to school until age 15. She then went to work at a local café as a waitress until she married Robert Stewart while still very young herself. Verna and ”Bob" had four children; Norma, Judy, Michael and Paul.
Verna went on to achieve her GED at South Plains College In 1965. She did great volunteer work both when her children were young; boy scouts, girl scouts and for her beloved Episcopal Church where she eventually became a Stephen minister.
She went on to pursue a career with AAFES until she became a Base Exchange Manager. She worked in Lubbock, San Angelo, El Paso, Del Rio and Abilene, Texas for AAFES.
Verna had 6 grandchildren (Kristy, Kathy, Tammy, Tara, Jennifer and Josh). She also had nine great-grandchildren (Hannah, Samantha, Madison, Bella, Charles, Benjamin, David, Julianne and Soren). Verna believed in putting her best foot forward. Even in her 90’s she only went about with lipstick on and hair combed. She loved music, things of beauty, and all things spiritual. She will be missed by many and touched many lives. We were blessed to have her here for so long. Peace be with you, Memaw
