Verna Jean Lakey's Obituary
LAKEY, VERNA JEAN MABREY 87, of Las Colinas, TX went home to be with Jesus on May 7, 2012. She is now free of the horrible disease of Alzheimers that robbed her of her life for 17 years. She fought a long, hard fight and now has a new body, free from disease and is now in the arms of her husband of 62 years and her Lord and Savior. Jean was born to Roscoe and Esther Mabrey on February 15, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska. As a child, they moved to St . Louis and as a teenager, she worked in a factory that made bomb casings for World War II. She then moved to Indiana to work in her brother’s restaurant and it is there that she met the love of her life, Lawrence David Lakey. Only after a few short weeks, they were married and went back to St.Louis where they began to raise their family. In 1960, they moved their family to Dallas where they started their own business, Allpac, Inc. She waitressed for a while and then worked at their business doing the books. Before too long, she was able to go back to being a full time homemaker, raising their 4 children, Ida, Bob, Mike and Cheryl. Jean spent her life in total devotion to her family. She also found many hours to volunteer at the Dallas Shriners Hospital. Her hobbies included crocheting, singing, bowling and playing poker with her girl friends. One of her favorite roles in life was that of Grandma to 15 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 12 great, great grandchildren. Her presence in our lives will be greatly missed. Jean is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence David Lakey. She is survived by her sister Betty Mabrey, her children Ida Louise Lakey, Bob Lakey and his wife Kay, Mike Lakey and his wife Elise and Cheryl DiMarzio and her husband Tony. Her grandchildren are Theresa Logan and her husband Michael, Michael Bell, Scott Lakey, Jeannie Flores, Ranee Matthews, Amber Richards and her husband Bo, Alexis DiMarzio, Matthew Gravley and his wife Megan, Anastasia Reeves and her husband Brian, Andrea DiMarzio, Andria DiMarzio and her husband Justin, Nicole Greenman and her husband Chad, Laura Lakey, Christopher Gravley and Joey Lakey. She is also survived by three sister-in-Iaws, Aida Lakey, Jean Lakey and Gwen Lakey. Visitation 6:00-8:00PM, Thursday, May 10, 2012. Service will be held 3:30PM, Friday, May 11 at Restland Memorial Chapel.
