Verne C. Cox's Obituary
Verne C. Cox of Dallas, Texas was born in Newport, Rhode Island on August 31, 1938, and moved to Texas as a child.
He met and married his wife of 65 years while attending the University of Texas at Austin, from which he graduated in 1960. He obtained a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Houston in 1962, and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Houston in 1964. He worked as a research scientist from 1964-70 at the Fels Research Institute for the Study of Human Development in Yellow Springs, Ohio before joining the University of Texas at Arlington in 1970 as a professor of psychology.
He would remain at the University of Texas at Arlington for 45 years serving as a professor, department chair, interim Dean of Science, and professor emeritus. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 21, 2025.
He will be remembered for his keen intellect, love of family, contributions to science, and his professorial talent. He was a lifelong supporter of the arts, a jazz aficionado, and strong believer that all people should be treated with decency and fairness.
He left the world a better place for having known him, and he will be missed. He is survived by his wife Mary, three sons, Robin, Kevin, and Sean, and granddaughter Savannah.
