Verletta’s Life, Love, and Legacy
A beautiful baby girl was born the third of eight children, July 9, 1938 to Mattie Hazel and George Lovie Cook, Sr., in Hugo, Oklahoma. Verletta grew up in Hugo, Oklahoma, she graduated in 1957 from Booker T. Washington High School. Verletta was very creative and had a passion for fashion and interior design. Verletta loved celebrating Christmas at her home with family and friends. At an early age she was baptized at First Baptist Church, by the Pastor Rev. Ruff. Verletta also worked at Trade Winn Restaurant in Tulsa, Oklahoma for many years as a waitress. Verletta met and married George Moses Armstrong, they had no children. Verletta then moved to Los Angeles, California and later met and married James A. Harris. James had two children of his own, Bradley and Chandra Harris. Verletta and her husband James moved to Plano, Texas and joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Isiah Joshua Jr. Verletta loved dogs and throughout her life Verletta and James took care of and raised several. Fino, a Poodle, was her first, then came Deacon a German Shepherd and Luke a Doberman. Verletta kept Deacon outside on the side of the house and Luke inside by the sliding glass door; she had to keep them separated because they would fight. Verletta’s last and most loved of all her dogs was Cody, a Lhaso apso, who she cherished the most, Cody was her heart. After Cody was gone Verletta was very sad but her sister Ometta sent her a stuffed animal which looked just like Cody, and she was very happy with Cody the stuffed animal version. She always kept it with her from that point on. Our beloved Verletta will be missed by all. We thank God for allowing Verletta to spend 87 years of life with us. A very special thank you to two special people Mrs. Sandra McClendon for being there for Verletta when she needed you the most, taking her to appointments and calling 911 when she had fallen, we can’t thank you enough. And to our cousin, Melanie Weatherall, for the time you spent caring for our sister Verletta when she needed it the most. Verletta loved spending time with cousin Melanie. Melanie was like a daughter to her and throughout the years she lived on and off with Verletta and James; she was instrumental in helping them in their later years. Verletta leaves to cherish her memories, her sisters, Ometta Guthrie of Los Angeles, California and Augusta Bonner of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two step-children, Bradley Harris of Los Angeles, California and Dr. Chandra Harris of Rhode Island and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
