Veta Smith's Obituary
Veta Smith, 85, entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Veta was born in LaQuilla, Texas on June 30, 1929, to James Elmer and Eleanor Edella Markle. Known for her strength of character, her grace, and fierce love and loyalty to her family and friends, her influence will be felt far beyond the three generations she leaves behind. After graduating from Corsicana High School, Veta married Walter Allan Smith in 1946. They met at the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Home for Widows and Orphans in Corsicana, Texas, in 1941. She loved and cherished her husband every day of their 63 years together. Professionally, Veta retired from Republic National Bank of Dallas in 1986 after a 37 year career and was one of the first women to be named Vice President of Banking during the 1970s. Known fondly as “Nana” to all who loved her she remained keenly interested in the lives of her friends and family until the day she passed away. Veta was an intelligent, strong, forward thinking, compassionate and loving woman who we were all very privileged to have in our lives. Veta leaves to treasure her memory a daughter, Donna Chereck and her husband Bob; three grandchildren, Amanda Campbell and her husband Greg; Andrew Chereck and his wife, Meghan; Adam Chereck and his wife, Emily; four great grandsons, Bennett Gregory, Lucas Walter and Miller Robert Campbell; Rylan Adam Chereck; and one long awaited great granddaughter, Emma Katherine Chereck; numerous nieces and nephews and many precious loving friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers and one sister. The family is grateful for the professional, loving and tender care that Veta received from the physicians, nurses and staff at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday, January 17 in The Abbey Chapel of Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas. Interment will follow the service. The family will welcome family and friends at the home of Donna and Bob Chereck. In lieu of flowers, donations in Veta’s memory may be made to the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center 8845 Wagner Street, Westminster, CO, 80031 or: The Genesis Women’s Shelter, 4411 Lemmon Avenue #201, Dallas, TX 75219.
