Virginia Helms Griffin's Obituary
Virginia Was born on 08/19/1927 To parents Tead and Ora Lee Helms in Knox City, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Johnny Helms, and sister Rowena Helms Johnson. She was briefly married to Billy Joe Averitt right out of high school. She later married Herbert Owens, Jr. and they moved to Olton, TX to start their farming life. Herb, Jr. died at the early age of 38. They farmed cotton for many years. Surviving family members include daughter Elaine McDowell, son-in-law David Harley McDowell of Plano, TX, four grandsons, Michael Gregory Webb, David Wayne McDowell, Jeffrey Parrish McDowell and John Michael McDowelll. three great-grandchildren, Shannon Webb, Micah Jean McDowell, and Matthew McDowell. She spent six years in Brisbane, Australia working and exploring. Virginia moved to Wylie in 1997 to be close to her family and she flourished in the new environment. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Sachse, TX and very active in her Sunday School class. Every Sunday morning, she baked some delicious treats and took them to her class. She had many years of volunteer service at Baylor Garland Hospital. She loved her job of keeping the Popcorn fresh and greeting guests who stopped by for a snack and some words of encouragement. Virginia's passion was cooking, and she was an excellent cook. She also loved sewing and made most of Her clothes. She had an amazing talent for always being the best dressed person in the room, and most of her attire was sewn by her own hands. She had a wonderful circle of loving friends and family. Virginia went home to be with her Lord on February 23, 2023, at the age of 95 years.
