Virginia Babette Merington's Obituary
On September 30, 2024, Virginia Babette Webb Merington was united with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years old.
Born in 1928 in Springhill, Louisiana, to Houston Carter Webb and Gladys Webb, Virginia grew up in a completely different world than we see today. She spent her childhood taking care of her three younger siblings, helping her mother and grandmother on their family farm in Catahoula Parish, storing watermelons under her bed, and waiting for the grocery truck to come by their house. Their family moved to Orange, Texas, in 1942 so that her father could help with the WWII war effort, and she attended Luther Stark High School. She was Valedictorian of her class in 1946.
While in Orange, Virginia met the love of her life, Richard Merington, at their church First Baptist Church Orange, and they were married in 1953. They spent nearly 45 years together until he passed away in 1998.
Virginia’s faith guided her throughout her life, showing Jesus’s light in all her actions. For 65 years, she taught Sunday School, gracefully leading and teaching children about the love of Jesus Christ. As a member of Park Cities Baptist Church for 45 years, she dedicated her time doing tasks such as accounting, secretarial work, and flower delivery to sick patients. Outside of church, Virginia continued to show the Christian way by acting as an example for everyone around her to follow. She was everything that everyone strives to be yet can never achieve.
Virginia was most known for her kindness, selflessness, gentleness, and dedication to make the world a better place. A breast cancer survivor, she drove cancer patients to and from their chemotherapy appointments. Virginia was extremely intelligent and had a sharp, witty sense of humor, and she always conquered any crossword puzzle, word search, and Jeopardy category she encountered. She also had a love for traveling the world, caring for her flowers, and listening to music.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Houston and Gladys Webb, her brothers Charles Webb and Duane Webb, and her husband, Richard Merington. Survivors who will cherish her memory include her sister, JoAnn Webb Turner; her two daughters, Nancy Merington Rhoades and Marsha Merington; her grandchildren Travis Camp, Melissa Camp, and Joshua Oliver; and 13 nieces and nephews. Virginia’s family would like to thank all the people who cared for her while she lived at Bethesda Gardens in Arlington.
The memorial service for Virginia Merington will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church in Ellis Chapel at 12 pm on Saturday October 12. Park Cities Baptist Church is located at 3933 Northwest Pkwy, Dallas, Texas. There will also be a live stream of the event at https://pcbcspecialevents.online.church.
In honor of her service to cancer patients through the Road to Recovery program, the family kindly suggests donations to the American Cancer Society in her name.
