Weldon Raymond Jones' Obituary
Weldon R. Jones, age 96, went home to be with our Lord on November 5, 2021 in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Windsor and Hassye Jones. Raised in Fort Worth until 1935, the family moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, starting up Hubig Pies after it fell into bankruptcy. He graduated from Tulane University in 1944 with a business degree and
promptly went to work for Chevron Oil as an accountant. He worked for Chevron for 28 years.
Weldon married Floy Mae Polk on February 19, 1956. He and Floy raised their three daughters in New Orleans until his retirement. They picked up stakes and moved to Richardson, Texas, to be closer to family and “give the girls a better education.” He watched all three daughters go to
Baylor University and instructed them to get their “MRS” degree.
In 2006 Weldon and Floy moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to be near their daughter, Melissa, who lovingly helped Weldon care for Floy. After 52 years of marriage, they were separated by her death. Melissa took on the responsibility of being there for Weldon for the next thirteen
years. Weldon married a lovely lady, Bessie Mae Chestnut, in 2009. She passed away in 2012, and once again, he was a widower.
Weldon had a deep abiding love for the Lord, his family, and his church family. He served as deacon at Gentilly Baptist, New Orleans, and deacon and church treasurer at First Baptist, Richardson. Weldon worked and helped others with their income taxes and watched the stock market faithfully up until the last six months. He had deep knowledge and wisdom to pass along. As one grandson said, “He left such a legacy.”
Weldon is preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Windsor H., wife, Floy, and wife, Bessie Mae. He is survived by his brother and wife, Bob and Nancy Jones, his three daughters, Melinda Smith (Greg), Melissa Gunnells (Jeff) and Ann Blessing. He also was blessed with nine
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, Weldon’s wishes were for friends and family to give to a charity of choice or The Floy P. and Weldon R. Jones Endowed Academic Religion Scholarship Fund, Baylor University, One Bear Place #97050, Waco, TX 76798-7050, or online at Baylor.edu/give.
