Chickie was always Weslynn to me. She was a wonderful part of more than thirty years of my life, so generous and supportive and smart, so lively and fun to be with. A few memories to share out of so many. I met Weslynn in the 60's, maybe at a bridge game or faculty wives' gourmet dinner, when we first came to UMKC. For years we lived a block away on Holmes and shared our lives as wives, mothers, and colleagues. When we had a baby, she surprised us with an elegant carriage she borrowed from the Rockhurst College Prop room. It kept our son well-rocked and quiet for a year. Much later, perhaps when the kids were already gone, she decided to have a pajama party. What a hilarious occasion! I brought my nightie, drank and gossiped with a few other 'old girls.' and then we slept overnight in the basement. Soon after we retired and moved away, we attended Matthew's wedding in California. A very special occasion for all of us dear friends, and Weslynn sparkled even more than usual. Wes and Ben visited us in San Francisco as they were planning their new house in Texas. Looking at Southwestern tiles on the streets and houses of the city was our tourist adventure 'du jour.' We never got to Texas to visit them, or see the house, but she sent me pictures. We kept in touch for a long time. I have missed her friendship ever since we moved away.
