Because we had the same name and were relatively close in age (8 years separated us) and we both went to SMU and we both practiced in the Metroplex, it seems like the “Bill Neal/Bill Neil” were also loosely connected one way or the other.
“Wild Bill” (or “Criminal Bill” as we would call him due to his stint as a DA and then also being Board Certified in law) were always getting mixed up and we worked hard to keep our referrals and clients straight. However, the greatest and funniest “mix up” came back in the 1970’s when I got a call on my home phone (no cell phones back then) about 11:00 pm from Bill. I was stunned to be receiving this call so late but Bill, with the directness that was so much a part of him immediately apologized for calling me so late but he had some news that I might want to know. He told me that one of his clients (the wife) had just been murdered by her estranged husband. I said that is tragic but what does that have to do with me. Bill then said, “well, he’s mad at me for representing her and he doesn’t know my residence address because I don’t publish it – but you do!” He advised it might be smart of me not to answer the door this evening. The guy never showed up that night but I went to bed with one eye open that night wondering if this mix up of the Bill Neil/Neal’s would be my demise. Bill had a personality the size of Texas. I, for one, will miss having to explain that I am “the other Bill Neal”. Rest in peace Wild Bill.
