Mr. William Steele Elliott's Obituary
Retired Patrol Division Captain, Dallas County Sheriff’s Department passed away Saturday, December 26, 2020 at Presbyterian Hospital after an illness of three weeks. He was age 78.
Captain Elliott served under five Dallas County Sheriffs beginning in February 1964 and retiring from the department in June 1998 after 34 years of service.
Bill was the only child of William Earl Elliott and Nelle-Lee Steele (nee Carter) on July 15, 1942 in Dallas, Texas. His family originally from Omaha, Nebraska/Woodbine, Iowa came to Dallas in the late 1930’s building one of the first homes in the Casa Linda Estates area. He attended Reinhardt Elementary School, Gaston Jr. High School and was a 1960 graduate of Bryan Adams High School. He attended and graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas in January 1964 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology/Criminal Studies. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, National Honor Society for Sociology and Pi Gamma Mu, National Social Science Honor Society.
Bill immediately obtained a position as a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff serving under Bill Decker. One of his early assignments with the Sheriff’s Department was as a jail guard for Jack Ruby, killer of Lee Harvey Oswald, alleged assassin of President John F. Kennedy.
Through the years, Bill, worked in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation Division, Warrants Division, Dallas-Ft Worth Combined Narcotics and Vice Task Force, Fugitive Division, Intake/Release of Dallas County Old Jail and finally full circle as Captain of Patrol Division until his retirement.
Bill was an active volunteer member of the State Fair of Texas Parade Staff, Special Events from 1968 through 1981.
Bill also served in the Texas State Guard attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer III with assignment to 4th CA Regiment, Army Component Command, Ft. Worth, TX, 2004 through 2008.
He was also a holder of a private pilots ASEL certification.
In 2016, he affiliated with The Christic Ministry, a non-denominational ministry attending Sanctus Theological Institute for pastoral training and completing required certifications in pastoral care and chaplaincy.
Bill is survived by two children, William Eugene Elliott of Dallas, Texas, Hillary Anne Elliott-Sullivan of Fredericksburg, Virginia, four grandchildren, Holli Elliott Clark of Rowlett, Texas, William Earl (Will) Elliott II of Austin, Texas, Ryan Patrick Sullivan and Iain Christopher Sullivan of Fredericksburg, Virginia, two great grandchildren, Daelyn Elizabeth Hope Clark and Bostin William Ray Clark of Rowlett, Texas.
