William Howard Self's Obituary
(July 1, 1920 – January 11, 2009) 88, of Farmer’s Branch, Texas, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, January 11, 2009. Born July 1, 1920, in Ragtown, Texas, Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Ausie and Annie Self; brothers Grover and Lawrence; and daughter Brenda Clay. He is survived by Charline, his wife of 62 years; brother, Ralph; daughter, Kathye Bergin and her husband, Casey; son-in-law, Donald Clay; grandchildren: Michael Clay, Keli Teague and her husband Sean, Tim Bergin and his wife Ann, and Peter Bergin; and great-grandchildren, Kassidi, Kelcee, and Dallas. A decorated veteran of the Pacific campaign of World War II, Howard was awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding bravery and meritorious service while he fought in New Guinea as a member of the 41st Infantry Division, 186th Infantry Regiment, from May 1942 until December 1944. “Howard” was a devout Christian and Bible scholar, serving for over 20 years as a deacon for the Walnut Hill Church of Christ. He and his beloved Charline were partners in life and faith, and they will continue to serve as models of Christian benevolence, particularly toward the ill, the prison population, and, most importantly, the orphans of Cherokee Home for Children. His extended family will honor and remember his humor, his wisdom, his strength of character, and his unbounded generosity. He will be missed and celebrated by many more whose lives he has changed. His memorial service will be Wednesday, January 14th, 10 a.m., at Walnut Hill Church of Christ. Donations to Cherokee Home for Children in lieu of flowers.
