Willie Mae Johnson's Obituary
JOHNSON, WILLIE MAE was born on August 2, 1921 on the Flowing Well Farm in Denton County, Texas. Surrounded by her family, she died on January 18, 2014, at the age of 92. Willie graduated valedictorian from Center Point High School at the age of 16 and attended business college, learning bookkeeping skills she would use throughout her life. Hired as one of the first women in banking in Denton County, Willie worked as a teller and then later as head bookkeeper at the Denton County National Bank for 17 years. She retired after 25 years as Financial Secretary of Schreiber Memorial United Methodist Church, having worked until she was 85 years old. Willie’s greatest loves were her family, her many friends, and a balanced ledger sheet. She was considered sharp, witty, compassionate, and a deeply trusted friend. Willie was a long-time, faithful member of Schreiber Memorial United Methodist Church, serving in many positions of leadership, including President of the United Methodist Women and Aldersgate Class Treasurer. Willie had a heart for mission, a deep compassion for others, and was often involved in community service activities and projects. She served on the Board of Directors of Wesley-Rankin Community Center as Treasurer for several years and continued to support this mission throughout her life. Those who knew Willie best will remember her saying, “All my days are good days.” The grandkids will remember that she loved them “a whole big batch.” And if you listen closely, you can still hear her singing, “It’s a hap-hap-happy day!” Willie was preceded in death by her husband Bobby F. Johnson, her parents Betty and Arthur McKinley Erwin, and sisters Marie White and Ruby Lee Erwin. She is survived by her brother A.M. Erwin and wife Juanita, daughter Debra Johnson Stafford and husband Charles, Sarah Johnson Squires and husband Blaine, six grandchildren: Matthew, Ryan, Andrew, Allison, Margaret, and Kate; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4:30-6:30 PM on Monday, January 20, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Schreiber Memorial United Methodist Church, 4525 Rickover Drive in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Wesley-Rankin Community Center, 3100 Crossman Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75212.
