Winfred Gray Vanderslice Jr.'s Obituary
Winfred Gray Vanderslice Jr., age 84, passed away peacefully at his home on December 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Winfred was born on April 23, 1941, in Dallas, Texas, to the late Lois Vanderslice-Shelton. He grew up in the Oak Clif area of Dallas and graduated from Adamson High School in 1959. Winfred lived a life rooted in love, kindness, and devotion to family. On August 8, 1960, he married the love of his life, Janet Cowan, beginning a marriage that spanned more than 65 years. Together, they raised their two daughters in DeSoto, Texas, where they lived for many years before settling in Bedford, Texas, cherishing the opportunity to be close to their children and grandchildren.
Winfred was a hardworking and dedicated man who spent many years working for Sears Craftsman Tools. He was recognized for his strong work ethic and reliability, receiving numerous awards prior to his retirement in 2003. He took great pride in his work and upheld honesty and integrity throughout his life.
Winfred will be remembered as a patient, kind, and humble man, always with a warm smile. He was very respectful and soft-spoken, with a touch of dry humor. He was quick to help anyone in need and left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Winfred had an artistic eye and loved to decorate with a contemporary flair. He enjoyed cooking and could eat his weight in desserts. Above all, he found his greatest joy in watching his grandchildren grow, cheering them on through sports, activities, and every stage of life. Winfred always welcomed everyone into his home, and made sure to say “Thank you for coming”. As the family said the final goodbyes, true to the caring heart and gentle manners he was known for, Winfred responded with the words he had always said to others, “Let me walk you out”.
Winfred is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Vanderslice; his children, Wendy Cook (Wade) and Tracy Ticknor (Michael); his grandchildren, Tanner Ticknor (Caroline), Tatum Holt (Carter), Quincy Cook, and Kade Cook; and his great-grandson, Theodore Gray Ticknor.
His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and all who knew and loved him.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 at Campisi’s, 5610 E. Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75206 from 12:00 to 3:00pm.
