Wing Gwong Chin's Obituary
Wing Gwong Chin, 81, son of Bak Keung Chin and Tun Hop Chin, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Texas Health Pretsbyterian in Allen. He will always be remembered by his wife, Pak Yip, his children, Kevin, Ken, and Louis, grandchildren Cameron, Rachel, Ethan, and Noah, his older brother Wing Dor Chin, his daughter-in-laws Amanda and Liling, his many nephews and nieces, and other relatives. Wing was born in China, the country he most loved to visit, and moved to the U.S. to help his father in the laundry business during the late 50’s. He met Pak in Hong Kong, also from the same village in China, and brought her to Boston in 1962, along with their young son Kevin. A few short years later, they had Ken followed by Louis. He started his long career in the restaurant business working at Trader Vics as a bartender, then later as a chef and bartender at other restaurants. He had a dream to own a restaurant so he learned the business and eventually partnered with his cousin Wing Foo Chin and others to open the Ye Cocke and Kettle Restaurant and Motor Inn in Seabrook, New Hampshire. From the late 1960’s to 1980’s, the business changed names to Hawaiian Gardens and then South Sea Restaurant and Motel. He eventually moved down to Texas along with his wife to live with his sons Kevin and Ken to help raise his grandchildren. Although he was semi-retired, he always wanted to meet and serve people so he held part-time jobs as a bartender at the Ramada Inn in Dallas and the Denton Country Club where he met one of his best friends, Chip. Wing was an outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting with his best pals John and others in New Hampshire. For the past 25 years that he lived in Texas, he always returned to New England at least once a year to see his son Louis, his friends and relatives, to go hunting, and to play a little mahjong in Boston. In his later retirement years, he exercised regularly at the local YMCA in Plano, where he met the “wise guys”, men who were of similar age, who worked out together, ate lunch together, and became very dear friends. Wing also made many friends at the Chase Oaks Church where he attended nearly every Sunday and accepted Christ as his Savior. He was well-loved by many and he will be sorely missed. There will be a viewing from 2:30 – 3:30pm, on May 12, 2018 at Restland Funeral Home, with a service to follow from 3:30PM to 4:30PM, and refreshments from 4:30PM-5:30PM.
