Winifred Whitney Saunders' Obituary
Winfred Miller Saunders, 96, of Mansfield, Texas, passed away on October 26, 2019. She was born to Col. Amory A. Miller and Amy Vanderveer McCormick Miller on April 13, 1923 in Fond du Lac Wisconsin, the third of five children. After high school, Winnie moved with her family to Illinois, where her father commanded an Army base. In the early years of WWII, she worked for DuPont, formulating batches for the manufacture of TNT for ordnance. In 1943, she joined the Navy and served in a Naval hospital lab in San Diego. After the war, she returned to Wisconsin, where she pursued her BS in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and was co-author of 4 published papers in the field.While at Wisconsin, she met and married Donald F. Saunders, a PhD candidate in Chemistry, on September 30, 1950. Don went to work for GSI/Texas Instruments, and they moved to Dallas in 1953. Winnie devoted her considerable talents to raising 3 boys, Richard, David, and Paul, and pursuing her love of bridge and knitting. When her sons headed off to college, she went to work as a customer service representative at a local bank and then as an office administrator for a cardiologist. When her sons were all out of school, she retired and devoted herself to volunteer work with her church and the North Dallas Shared Ministries food bank.Don passed away in 2013, and Winnie moved to Mansfield to be closer to her youngest son, Paul. In Mansfield, she found an outlet for bridge with her many friends in the Watercrest community and a new and loving church home at St. Gregory’s Anglican Church. Winnie will be missed by all who knew her.Winnie is survived by her three sons, Richard and his wife Nancy (Youngsville, LA), David and his wife Joanne (Lufkin,TX) and Paul and his wife Cindy (Kennedale, TX), and by ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.After a family graveside service, a memorial service will be held at St. Gregory’s Anglican Church, Mansfield on Saturday, November 2 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to St. Gregory’s Anglican Church, 1091 Country Club Drive, Mansfield TX 76063.Funeral arrangements for Winifred Whitney Saunders have been faithfully entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery, which is located at 13005 Greenville Ave., at the intersection of Restland Road, Dallas, Texas 75243, and can be reached at (972) 238-7111.
