W.J. Davis' Obituary
Davis, W.J., 85, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend died peacefully April 10, 2008 in Richardson, Texas. Born in San Antonio, Texas on May 10, 1922 to Harry and Billie Davis, he graduated from Shriner Institute in Crane, Texas and then attended Texas A&M on a football scholarship. He then joined the Navy and was sent to The University of Texas for Officer Training School, where he also played football. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Mississippi Southern where he was initiated into Phi Beta Kappa and received both is Bachelors and Masters degrees. After graduation he joined the academic and coaching faculty at Jones County Junior College. After several teaching and coaching years he went into the business world for a short time until his love for teaching soon returned and he accepted a teaching and coaching position at Ennis High School where he later became Principal and Superintendent of EISD. In 1961 he left Ennis to work for National ChemSearch Corporation for a short time until he finally decided that Education was where his heart lay. He returned to Texas as a Teacher at Lake Highlands High School and later became Assistant Principal there. He left there to open Forest Meadow Junior High School as Principal and later went to Apollo Junior High where he was Principal until his retirement after 41 years in Education. After retirement and during his and Lola’s many years of travels, he still managed to work multiple jobs. He returned to Education as a Supervisor of Student Teachers for Texas A&M and the University of North Texas. He managed the stadium for Berkner Lake Highlands for 32 years and the RHS gym for several years. He is survived by his loving wife Lola, and dear children: Butch and his wife Karen, Beth and her husband Mike Roney, Bill, Kurt Kahle and Cheryl, Gretchen Kahle and Tad Horton, and Kelly Kahle and John Sell; 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grand children, sister-in-law Bonnie Detrie and many friends. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm Sunday, April 13, 2008. Service will be 1:00pm Monday, April 14, 2008 at Restland Memorial chapel. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choosing.
