Wylfa Alexander Bowles' Obituary
BOWLES, WYLFA ALEXANDER died peacefully on December 19, 2013. She was born in Clarendon, Texas on September 5, 1914. A fourth generation Texan, she was the 7th child of Robert Henry Alexander, a West Texas cowboy, and Delia Ryan Alexander. After graduating from Clarendon College, Wylfa came to Dallas in 1933 in the depths of the Great Depression and created a wonderful life for the next 80 years. She epitomized character, warmth and grace. Wylfa was the consummate wife, mother, hostess and treasure to many. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Donald E. Bowles, Sr. During their 69 years together, Donald and Wylfa traveled the world and had many adventures. Wylfa was the President of the Dallas Garden Club, on the Board of Governors of the Dallas Woman’s Club, Trustee of Dallas Baptist University and past recipient of the Ruth Award for faithfulness and service by Dallas Baptist University. Wylfa’s greatest joy was her children and their spouses, Don and Janie Bowles, George and Mary Bowles and Ellen and John Rain, her 8 grandchildren and her 6 great grandchildren, with one more on the way. Until the last month of her life, Wylfa was playing bridge, entertaining in her home and reading the Sunday New York Times cover to cover. 99 years was not long enough with our wonderful Mimi. A private family memorial service is planned. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Dallas Woman’s Club, Dallas Baptist University or the Dallas Garden Club.
