Alex Courtney McCord's Obituary
Alex Courtney McCord died peacefully after a prolonged battle with
Parkinson’s Disease at Edgemere Plaza in Dallas, Texas on Thursday
June 27, 2024.
Courtney was born on December 16, 1941, in Dallas, Texas. As an Eagle
Scout in 1956 from Troop 70, he graduated from Highland Park High
School and attended Shriner College. He was a lifelong resident of
University Park, Texas.
In August 1963, Courtney completed paratrooper training in the
Airborne Course at The United States Army Infantry School at Fort
Benning, Georgia. As a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces,
Courtney was a proud Green Beret and demolitions expert.
Upon completion of his duties for the U.S. Army, Courtney began work
as an executive in the insurance company founded by his father, the
Hancel McCord Co. The company specialized in providing pension
funds and was a leading firm for many years. Courtney took over as the
head of the company after his father passed away and continued to
work tirelessly until he retired.
Passionate about helping children live and love nature, Courtney was
active for most of his adult life as a Board member and significant
fundraiser for his beloved Camp Grady Spruce, located along the
shores of Possum Kingdom Lake near Graford, Texas. Many thousands
of children were able to enjoy a summer camp experience due to his
devotion to the Camp over many decades.
An expert on the Civil War, Courtney enjoyed studying all facets of U.S.
history, and had a love for traveling to historical sites across America.
As an avid outdoorsman, Courtney loved fly fishing around the
country, but especially in Colorado while hiking in Rocky Mountain
National Park. He especially loved visiting the family home in Estes
Park, Colorado. It was here that he was the happiest and enjoyed
everything the Rocky Mountains had to offer.
Most of all, Courtney was a beloved friend to anyone who knew him.
He had a kind spirit, with a true sense of fun and adventure,
complimented by a keen sense of humor that remained true even in his
last days.
Thank you to Dr. Allison Sibley and Julie Cain for your devoted care to
Courtney during his battle with Parkinsons, along with our heartfelt
gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff who provided Courtney with
exceptional care at Edgemere Plaza. To his many friends there, thank
you for making him feel like family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hancel M. McCord, Sr. and
Margaret Courtney McCord. He is survived by his brother, Hancel
McCord, Jr. and wife, Judith Chandler McCord of Santa Barbara,
California, his niece Kerry McCord McKay, her daughter Courtney
Jane McKay, and her sons Cash and Carter McKay, now living in
Houston, Texas.
For his countless friends who loved him, he will be greatly missed. A
Celebration of Life ceremony will be held July 11, 2024 at 2:00PM at
Restland Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75242, in the
Wildwood Chapel, located in the Restland Park area towards the rear
of the property.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the YMCA Camp Grady
Spruce c/o the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas
