B.D. "Blackie" Marks' Obituary
B. D. “Blackie” Marks, 95, of Quitman, TX was born on August 10, 1926 in Hebron, PA to William and Estella Detweiller Marks. He left this world on August 22, 2021 to rejoin his wife of 58 years, Phyllis Smock Marks. Blackie and Phyllis were married on November 08, 1952 in Walker County, GA.
A World War II and Korean War Veteran, he served his country as a chef in the Army’s 28th Infantry Division from August, 1944 until January, 1947. He again served in the Army National Guard of the United States / Army National Guard of Pennsylvania from September, 1950 until August, 1952. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and served in the Philippines, Germany and Korea.
Blackie was retired after 35 of service with the Indiana Lumbermen’s Mutual Insurance Company. Following his retirement he enjoyed golf and working in his garden and anyone else’s garden if they needed help. He loved both Western movies and books. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge # 2334 of Irving, TX and the VFW of Winnsboro, TX.
His was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his son Philip (and wife Paula) Marks of Rowlett, TX, his daughter, Brenda (and husband Rusty) Brown of Euless, TX, 3 grandchildren, Mark Huckaby, Jr. of Euless, TX, Randi (and husband Justin) Kerr of Frisco, TX, and Matt (and wife Lynlie) Brown of Bedford, TX along with 3 great-granddaughters, Jasey Rae Kerr, Jordi Kerr and Lea Brown. He is also survived by “his other daughter” Pam Kerr of Winnsboro, TX.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 04, 2021 at 2:00 pm with visitation at 1:00 pm at Restland Memorial Chapel.
