In memory of my brother, Berlan Dumas who lived a long life. A special Christian loving everyone.A great uncle who made everyone feel special. He was interested in seeing how everything worked. He would come to the Rio Grande Valley where he grew up.Our sister Janette Dumas Brackin, who is deceased now, would take him from So Padre Island to McAllen to show him how the Valley had grown. They went out to the Sugar Mill, he wanted to know how it worked. He would walk the streets of the little town of Combes where our Mom and Dad are buried. When he vacationed in Mexico, he would lay under their gazebo and count the number of palm leaves to see how many it took to make a shade with the intention to build one for himself..I want to tell you of a tale of him being on the USS Arkansas in WW2. I was very young and believed everything he said. He asked mother to send him a sling shooter and a box of rocks. She did, and he told me he shot down a Kamikaze airplane. That was our joke. The other thing which is not a joke on the same ship, he watched with others all day the Marines climbed the mountain to put up our flag which one of the statues is on the grounds of our Marine Military Academy. He made a great impact on the lives of so many.My daughter, Deanna Thomas, had to take her 10-year-old daughter for something at the Denton College, so Aunt Pauline and Uncle Berlan asked them to stay with them. Uncle Berlan took them out to DFW and showed them all around the airport. Also, they went to Wednesday night services at the Church of Christ with him and met all of his friends at the What A Burger. She was so happy that her girls got to know him. Condolences from all that knew him.Rest in Peace my Brother Geneva Dumas Johnson
