Billy B Wood's Obituary
Mr. Bill Wood passed away Friday, August 5, 2016 at his home in Plano, Texas. He was 92 years old. Billy was born December 3, 1923 in Dallas, Texas to Jack L. and Louise Wood. He grew up in the Lakewood area of Dallas and attended Woodrow Wilson High School in January 1942.During his senior year, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy to serve in WWII. He became a pharmacist mate and wore both the Navy and Marine Corps uniforms. He was initially assigned to a hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii. While there, Billy accompanied his fellow sailor to the airport to greet his girlfriend. The girlfriend also brought a friend, Helen, that is how he met his wife. Billy and Helen were married in May 1942 and stayed happily married for 50 years. She passed away in 2002. Billy spent the War in the Pacific, at Midway and the Philippine Islands. He was assigned to the USS Cunningham and witnessed the Atomic Bomb test in the Pacific. He was discharged from the Navy in 1948. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1951 and was stationed in Germany. While there, they adopted two children, Peter and Patricia. They returned to the United States in 1955 and lived in El Paso, Texas, where Billy was stationed at Ft. Bliss until he retired from the Army in 1965. Billy went to work for the U. S. Post Office in a management position until he retired in 1978. In El Paso, he loved kids and was active with little league as a football & baseball coach. He also enjoyed rebuilding and restoring old cars, 3 of which were Mustangs he was very proud of. He was active in woodworking, building table top trains in his garage and loved yard work. Bill loved going for walks and spoiling his dogs. He was a proud, devoted father and a champion to his children. Several years later, he and Helen moved to Dallas to be near his family. Along with his other hobbies, he volunteered at the library one day a week. Billy is survived by his daughter Patricia L. Wood; his son Peter Wood and daughter-in-law Patricia A. Wood, and grandson Carlos Wood. He is also survived by three nieces, Carol Hemingway and Helen Vogel living in Arizona and Lee McQuire of Alabama as well as a nephew and niece, John and Georgia Baumgarth living in Minnesota. His brother Jackson and sister Betty preceded him in death. He will forever be greatly missed & always in our hearts. We’ll miss his funny story telling, great sense of humor, twinkling eyes, & million dollar smile. He was endearing to everyone. He touched the hearts of all who met him. He was the BEST dad ever! Friends and family will be celebrating Billy’s life on Veteran’s Day, Friday, November 11, 2016 at 12:00PM in the Abby Chapel at Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, Tx. Inurnment at the graveside with full military honors follows. Patricia Wood will host a reception at her home afterwards, around 2PM. 214-998-8853.
