Bill served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the early 1950s and was stationed in San Diego, California until his discharge. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated in 1956 with a degree in Pharmacy. His pioneering research facilitated the introduction of Aloe Vera into the world of commercial products. He was founder and co-founder of several companies involved in the cosmetic, medical, and agricultural uses of Aloe Vera.
He is preceded in death by sister Dorothy Coats Branton and brother Alvis Lee Coats.
A generous and loving father and grandfather, he is survived by many loved ones including children Kimberly Coats Dunnagan (Steve) of Little Rock, Shannon Coats (Noelle) of Dallas, and Lisa Marie Coats of Dallas; former spouses Jewel Campbell and Linda Walker; grandchildren Rachel Coats, Annie Dunnagan Grimes (Christian), Laura Dunnagan, Rhett Coats, and Sawyer Coats; friends Brody Williams and Miguel Avila.
