CARMELO ATANGAN GARCIA, M.D.June 2, 2020
Carmelo Atangan Garcia, born July 16, 1937 in Rosario Cavite, Philippines, joined his Lord & Savior on May 22, 2020.
He was preceded in death by his parents Gerardo E. Garcia & Dorotea T. Atangan; his brother Jose Atangan Garcia; his beloved wife of 55 years, Marietta L. Gonzales Garcia; and his son James Anthony G. Garcia.
He grew up in Manila, Philippines, where he attended St. Paul Elementary School & attended San Jose Seminary for high school. He attended Ateneo de Manila University (a.k.a. Ateneo) for college and went on to receive his Doctoris in Medicina et Chirurgia (Doctor of Medicine and Surgery) from the Pontificia et Regalis Universitas Santo Thomae (Pontifical and Royal University of Saint Thomas, a.k.a. University of Santo Tomas) in Manila, Philippines in 1963.
He and Marietta L. Gonzales were married on December 8, 1961 and begot three children: Azalea Marie G. Garcia Sison (husband, Antonio P. Sison, M.D.), Patrick Arnold G. Garcia (wife, Josephine Antonette C. Lazaro Garcia), James Anthony G. Garcia, who died on July 16, 1997.
He held Medical Director, Chief of Staff, and Department Chief positions throughout his distinguished medical career; was an Instructor of Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Jurisprudence at University of Saint Louis (Baguio City, Philippines); and was a private practicing physician in both General and Family Medicine.
A Board Eligible physician with American Board of Emergency Medicine (1991), he was a member of numerous medical organizations: Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Dallas Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, Fellow -American Academy of Family Physicians (1991), Association of Philippine Physicians in America. He was President –North Texas Association of Philippine Physicians 1988-1989, Vice President –Philippine American Association of Family Physicians, USA 1990-1996, Charter Member –American College of Emergency Physicians (March 1972), Fellow –American College of International Physicians.
He leaves behind two children: Azalea Marie G. Garcia Sison and Patrick Arnold G. Garcia; five grandchildren: Angelica Maria Garcia Sison, Adrian Paul G. Sison, 2ndLt USMC, Augustus James G. Sison, Carmelo Antonio L. Garcia II, and Justin Xavier L. Garcia; godsons & goddaughters; several cousins; a nephew: Jose F. Garcia Jr.; a niece: Jo-Ann F. Garcia; grandnephews & grandnieces; and lots of dear and beloved friends. He is greatly missed.
