I am fortunate to have shared a sailing adventure with Carolyn on the Chesapeake Bay in June 2018. Sam and Carolyn joined our club in 2015 and they did not hesitate to go on this trip. I was a bit concerned about her ability to maneuver on and off the boat because of her agility due to age as well as her depth perception challenges due blindness in one eye. Whenever I attempted to assist her getting into the small rubber dinghy, she would plop herself down on the swim platform of the boat, exclaiming that "I can do it myself", and then slide her rear onto the dinghy. At one of our club meetings, Sam gave a presentation about their experiences of living and cruising on their sail boat. on the east coast. I recall that he said that when it was time for them to give up the boat life (the first time), they were walking on the dock to the boat broker and she stopped dead in her tracks proclaiming that she wasn't ready and insisted that they continue cruising for a bit longer. We had been friends for less than a decade, but I will always remember the exuberance for life that she exemplified as well as her stubborn independence.
Thank you Carolyn for sharing a small portion of your journey with me.
