I first met Mr. Cavender in the early 70's when he moved in next door to my family in Austin. I was 12 or 13 at the time and became close friends with his son Brent. I remember looking at Herb's retirement plaque from the Dallas Police Dept. That he had on his wall and thinking "how cool is that ?!!". Herb formed my impression of what a police officer was….he had a strong hand shake and a strong personality. Herb was outgoing and always moving fast (especially when driving). He scared me to death, but what a trill! I had great times with the Cavender family, water skiing or fishing from their boat on one of Austin's beautiful lakes, playing football or any number of other games out front in "the cove" . I remember thinking that Herb could do anything. One day we wanted to play a little football and Herb somehow was able to get Brent, Terri and her boyfriend Bill into the UT stadium to play a game. Funny what you remember. I thought Herb had such a cool life that after college I figured I would give the Dallas Police Dept a try for a year or two before getting a "real job". Now, 30 years later, I am myself about to get a retirement plaque from the DPD. Like Herb, I never did have to get a "real job"! He will be missed… my best to the Cavender family.
