Charles Alton Matz's Obituary
Charles Alton Matz of Dallas, Texas, passed away on November 6, 2021. Charles was born in Harlingen, Texas on September 21, 1948. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering. He worked several years for Brown + Root and Neiman Marcus, winning multiple awards for his forward-thinking designs.
Passionate about learning and technology, Charles then trained himself in computer engineering and became an entrepreneur in the early 1980s. He loved what he did, setting up and maintaining information systems for numerous oil & gas and legal institutions.
Charles’ longest standing client was the 5th District Court of Appeals in Dallas, Texas where he began working in the mid 80s. One of his proudest achievements was running a pilot project to bring the court online, developing the first appellate website of Texas. Courtstuff.com won the 2001 Justice Served Top Ten Court Website Award and a Microsoft Site Patrol Award for the most sophisticated design.
Charles was a devoted family man and Christian. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dallas where he served as an usher. He loved helping others and being an active member of his community. He was heavily involved in the Boy Scouts of America for nearly 20 years, serving as a Cubmaster and then in various leadership positions. He received the 2016 YES “Your Excellent Service” Award for his work with the Scouts.
Charles had a unique way of lighting up a room and filling it with joy. He laughed loudly, loved deeply, worked tirelessly and lived fully. Always the extrovert, he loved meeting new people and made friends everywhere he went. He will be deeply missed by all those whose path he crossed.
Charles is survived by his wife Lisa, daughter Claire and sons Myles and John, as well as his siblings Johnelle Donnell, Katherine Crenshaw, Robbie Matz, their spouses and his many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Celebration of Life will be held in Truett Chapel at First Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boy Scouts of America Circle Ten Council in Charles’ honor. https://donations.scouting.org/#/council/571/appeal/15
