David Gerald (Jerry) Savell's Obituary
Born November 9, 1933 in Ferris, Texas to parents S. Aron and Mary Lois Savell; died at age 81 of ALS November 28, 2014 at home in Dallas. Jerry is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Phyllis Chitwood Savell, his loving (baby) daughter, Lisa S. Spragins of Garland, his two precious grandchildren, Lindsey Whitehouse, RN, (husband Tyler), Tampa, FL, and Tyler Spragins, NYC, both of whom are Baylor grads; 3 brothers: John Savell (Daphine), Ken Savell (Debra), and Dr. Jeff Savell (Jackie); many nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved son, Todd David Savell, and his younger brother, Robert. Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953, stationed in Salzburg, Austria. He was promoted to Section Leader in the Artillery. Jerry started his own business in 1976, Precast Concrete Services; he started in the industry as a draftsman, then estimator, salesman, and finally General Mgr. for various firms in Arlington, Abilene, Amarillo, Houston and Dallas. Two of the projects of which he was most proud were The George H.W. Bush Library in College Station and The Ballpark in Houston. He made many friends in the concrete industry, traveling to places in Europe and the U:K., as well as all over the U.S. and Hawaii in his line of work. He was an avid golfer for many years; and enjoyed playing all the beautiful courses in Pebble Beach. His favorite trip was when he flew to Scotland to play seven of those famous courses. Jerry loved Texas A&M and Aggie football. He was a member of Dallas Athletic Club (DAC), where, as Greens Chairman, he worked with Jack Nicklaus in redesigning both courses. He was on the Board of Directors six years, the last year Board President. While at DAC, he was given the prestigious MGA Bob Wells Award, given to outstanding golf members. Jerry adored and spoiled his two children, always attending every sporting event, school play, recital. The same was true after his two grandchildren were born: Jerry never missed any of Tyler’s baseball games, and he never missed a choral or dance recital, cheer competition in which Lindsey was involved. Jerry was the most loving, generous and devoted Husband, Dad, Grampa, son and brother. Phyllis and Jerry were long time members of Highland Oaks Church of Christ; he was a kind, tender-hearted Christian gentleman. Jerry had a special saying that he often told Phyllis he wanted to be remembered by: ‘IF YOU CAN’T HAVE FUN, THEN DON’T SHOW UP.’ The visitation for David Savell will be from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM Monday, December 1, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home.
