David Laurence Hermann's Obituary
David Laurence Hermann, PhD, died peacefully, in Dallas, TX on February 19, 2024, at Faith Presbyterian Hospice surrounded by family. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for the past 2 years.
David was born in Dallas, TX on September 15, 1967, to Bene’ Andrea (Benno) Turner and Harry Mark Hermann. David attended Tuloso-Midway High School in Corpus Christi, TX before attending and graduating from the University of Dallas in Irving, TX. He majored in Psychology and continued to Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA to receive his master's degree. He then received his PhD in Educational Leadership at Penn State. He worked in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Virginia, and Texas as a school psychologist before embarking on a career with the Department of Defense Education Activity, first in Georgia then in Japan. He expanded his experience and skill set in school administration when he became the Assistant Principal of an elementary school at Yokota Air Base and Yokosuka Middle School at Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka. He then moved to Okinawa to become the Instructional System Specialist for the DODEA Okinawa District.
David had a lifelong love of reading, puzzles, and games, especially role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Civilization as well as live action role-playing. He later developed a love of cooking and baking. He will be fondly remembered by his colleagues and friends not only for his professionalism and dedication but for the tasty treats he made for them.
David met his future wife, Nien-hwa Chin, while they both attended Penn State for their graduate studies. They married on October 29, 2006, and welcomed their son, Joshua Kyle in 2008 and daughter, Elspeth Claire in 2012. His family meant the world to him.
David was preceded in death by his father, Harry M. Hermann, his paternal grandparents, Arnold and Bess Hermann, and his maternal grandparents, Louis and Claire Benno.
David is survived by his wife, Nien-hwa, son, Joshua, daughter, Elspeth; his mother, Bene’ Andrea (Benno) Turner; brothers, Dr. Jeffrey Hermann (wife Donna), Colin, and Jared; nieces Sophie and Olivia; aunt Cathy (Benno) Miller, uncle Alvin J. Miller, cousins Jordan (Miller) Burgess (husband Logan) and Ryan Miller.
The Inurnment Service will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 3:00 pm at Restland Cemetery/The Whispering Waters Mausoleum in Dallas. A Shiva Service will be held at Adat Chaverim, 6000 Custer Road, Bldg.9, Plano, TX on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 5:00 pm.
