Donald Roger Safford's Obituary
Donald Roger Safford, 73, of Carrollton, died peacefully on July 17th after a long illness.
Born to Don F. and Elizabeth Safford on Sept. 19, 1950, in Borger, Texas, he grew up in Stinnett in the Texas Panhandle and attended college on football scholarships at Western State Colorado University in Crested Butte, CO, and Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX. He also attended the University of Texas in Austin, Texas
He began working at Red Ball Motor Freight in Houston in 1975, and later worked at McLean Trucking Co. in Dallas as a dock supervisor. With McLean, he moved to Shreveport, LA, where he became a terminal manager in 1981. Don then moved to SAIA Trucking Co. in 1984. He moved back to Dallas 1989 with SAIA where he held various management positions until he joined his final company, Southeastern Trucking, in 2006. Don remained with Southeastern until his retirement in 2020.
Don met and married Yolanda Galvan in 1972. Their loving marriage resulted in the birth of two children, Donald Galvan Safford and Allyson Marie Safford. He was a loving father and grandfather and enjoyed hearing of his granddaughters’ activities and watching their antics on FaceTime.
Don loved watching the Dallas Cowboys and University of Texas Longhorns on television. His other favorite sports team was the Texas Rangers. A highlight for Don was going to Texas Rangers games and watching them win the World Series in 2023.
He is survived by his loving wife Yolanda, his son U. S. Navy CDR Donald G. Safford and wife Michelle of San Diego, Calif., his daughter Allyson Safford of Carrollton, granddaughters Aliya and London Safford of San Diego, his sister Janet Safford Cline and her husband Ray of Port Arthur, TX, brother-in-law John A. Galvan and his wife, Elaine, of Lumberton, TX and sister-in-law Teresa Galvan of Corpus Christi and loving niece and nephews.
