Dorothy Charlene Oakes' Obituary
Dorothy Charlene Oakes was born on November 9, 1925, in Sweetwater, Texas and went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 6, 2017, in McKinney, Texas.Charlene is survived by her son Philip and wife Beth, son Tim and wife Christy and four grandchildren, Caleb, Hannah, Andrew & Lindsey. Also, her sisters Mary, Mabel and Louise, and many nieces and nephews. Charlene is preceded in death by her husband, George, her sisters Leona, Margaret, Kathryn, and brothers Charles, John, and Virgil. Charlene graduated from Hardin Simmons University in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She earned her Masters of Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1952. She graduated from Language school in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1953. In 1988, she was certified as a specialist in bilingual education from East Texas State University/Commerce. And, at the age of 80, completed coursework for accreditation in Medical Transcription from Collin College. She loved learning and teaching others. In 1952, she was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board as a missionary to Equatorial Brazil.Charlene met George Oakes in a language school in South Brazil. They were married in Dallas on May 26, 1956 during their first furlough. Charlene was a teacher with Dallas and Duncanville ISD ‘s for a combined 15 years of service. She was a Missionary / Teacher in various regions of Brazil for 27 years. Upon her retirement, she continued to teach others with the goal of sharing the Lord with everyone she met. She was a loved substitute teacher and crossing guard for McKinney ISD. Charlene is remembered for her unashamed testimony, determination, honesty, tenacity, quick wit, outrageous comments, her love of teaching others, organizing and supporting George and her boys in immeasurable ways. In her last decade, her passion was her grandchildren whom she covered in prayer, without fail, every single day. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Crosspoint Church in McKinney, Texas.
