Douglas W. Smith's Obituary
Douglas William Smith passed away suddenly on Sunday February 7, 2016. Doug was born to Joan M. Smith and Clifton G. Smith on May 28, 1964 in Albany, New York. He graduated from Colonie Central High School in 1982. Doug joined the Army in 1984 and served for 7 years as a Sargent-E5 in both the USA and Europe. He was honorably discharged from service in 1990. Doug then became a communication specialist and transferred to the Dallas area in 1994. He was currently employed by Verizon as a software engineer at the time of his passing. His passions included hunting with his father, ice hockey and billiards pool. He served in the N.E. Dallas APA as both an exceptional player and referee at the local and national levels. Doug was an avid Dallas Stars fan and was a season ticket holder. Doug was preceded in death by his father Clifton G. Smith of Colonie, New York, his sister Jennifer A. Smith of Colonie, New York and Uncle Gary French. He is survived by his long time devoted companion Heather Reid of Texas, mother Joan Smith of Colonie, New York, brother Greg Smith and wife Tracey of Colonie, New York, first wife Sherrie Smith of Texas and step son Mark of California. He is also survived by an uncle William Smith of New York, cousins Chad and Clark Smith of New York, an aunt Shirley DeStafeno, aunt Mary French and cousins Mark French and Scott French. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 12, 2016 from 5:00 PM – 7:15 PM in the Abbey Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. Doug will be interred in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in New York. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243.
