Dr. Edwin B. Hassler Jr. 's Obituary
Dr. Edwin Bernard Hassler, Jr. (Ed) passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 22, 2020 at the age of 81.
Ed was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 14, 1938. He was the son of Edwin B. Hassler, Sr., a pioneer in the communication industry, and Fanny A. Hassler, a musician, music teacher and orchestra director. Ed attended Northwestern University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. It was at Northwestern that he met the love of his life, Ida Phelps Hassler when Ida won first chair clarinet as a freshman from Ed who was a junior at the time. They were engaged in a few weeks, and were married in 1962. Ed continued to the University of Illinois where he earned both a Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, Ed and Ida moved to Dallas where Ed took a job with Texas Instruments. He held many positions during his 33 year tenure at Texas Instruments where he was a pioneer in Design Automation.
Ed was much more than an engineer and employee. He and Ida have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Ed was involved in as many parts of their lives as possible. He was a youth group leader, church session member, Girl Scout leader, band parent and supporter in every way. He could fix ANYTHING and was often called upon by friends, family and neighbors when things went awry. His intelligence and can do attitude allowed him to accomplish anything he set his mind to. Ed will be remembered as a kind, generous and enthusiastic man. He missed Ida terribly, but is now with her in God’s care.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Ida. Ed is survived by his children, Becky Shellabarger (Loren) of Dubuque, Iowa, Betsy Johnson (Mike) of Louisville, Kentucky and Ed Hassler III (Leslie) of Dallas, Texas, and six grandchildren, Loren Shellabarger IV, David Shellabarger, Julie Johnson, Amy Johnson, Edwin Hassler IV and Christian Hassler.
A private graveside service will be held for family. When restrictions on gatherings are lifted, a memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Allen, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Dallas Zoo (www.dallaszoo.com), First Presbyterian Church Allen (fpcallen.org) or VNA Hospice of Texas (vnatexas.org).
