Flo (Lois Floriene) Howard Kilmer's Obituary
Lois Floriene Kilmer, 95, born in Inola, Oklahoma, to Laura and Hugh Howard on January 10, 1924. Flo passed away in Dallas on Monday, June 10, 2019.Flo graduated valedictorian of Holdenville High School, Class of 1941. She worked for land appraisers for Native Americans in OK, then moved to Gainesville, TX. After moving to Dallas, she worked for the War Department, War Office of Engineers, Southwestern Division, during WWII. During that time, she was awarded the “Emblem for Civilian Service.”On July 10, 1945, Flo married Robert Bruce Kilmer, Jr., at Lakewood Methodist Church. Actively involved together in all aspects of their daily lives – family, work and church – they were happily married for the next 62 years. Some of their most joyful times were during their 31 years running Boys Baseball, Inc., in Dallas County. Flo was the secretary/statistician.Flo began learning leadership skills at an early age as an active member of the Order of the Rainbow Girls and Eastern Star. For many years, she was a leader of Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls as well as a Board member of the Lee Elementary, Long Jr. High, and Woodrow Wilson High School PTAs. A charter member of the original First Community Church on Mockingbird Ln., she worked over 45 years with the First Community Welfare Group making tens of thousands of finger puppets for the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and layettes for newborns at Parkland Hospital. For many years she delivered Meals on Wheels in East Dallas. At Jackson Elementary, she volunteered with the Reading is Fundamental program, and she tutored immigrant children through the Adventure in Living Program.A charter member of the Greater Lakewood Shepherd Center, Flo was on the Board of Directors and especially active with the drama groups. Her portrayal of Mae West was legendary and in high demand across Dallas!Over the years, Flo received numerous awards for volunteer work with the Dallas Parks and Recreation Dept. In 1998, she was Outstanding Volunteer of the Year for the Volunteer Center of Dallas County.During her retirement, she was involved with several WWII-related groups including the Women’s Auxiliary of the POW and Purple Heart organizations.She was a fun-loving soul who enjoyed traveling with friends and family, participating in her numerous bridge and book clubs, and serving others with a smile. She was the embodiment of the words, “Go, do all the good you can, for as long as you can, in all the ways you can.”Flo was preceded in death by an infant daughter (Laurie), her husband (Bruce), her parents (Laura and Hugh), and her siblings (Ralph, Bertha, and Dee).She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Eldridge Moak of Bullard, TX; her son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Christy Kilmer of Granbury, TX; six grandchildren (Emily, Laura, Carrie, Robert, Susan, Ryan), and nine great-grandchildren.A memorial service for Flo will be held in July.
