Frances Martindale Curry's Obituary
Curry, Frances Janella Martindale ~ Age 103, died on February 28, 2011 at the Walnut Place nursing home in Dallas, TX. She was the daughter of Adolphus Simpson Martindale and Harriet Catherine (Musser) Martindale. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years Duncan Ford Curry, by her sisters Minnie Venus Glasgow, Hazel Nadine Martindale, Lois Juanita Mattison, and Mary Kathryn Brown, and by her brother George Kelsey Martindale. She is survived by her only son Stephen Curry and his life partner Raymond Whisnant, and by many nieces and nephews spanning four generations. She was born on January 14, 1908 in Nashville AR, less than a month after Oklahoma became a state. She grew up in a frontier environment where self-reliance and hard work were essential for survival. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class in 1925. In the summer of 1927 she attended the Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, AR and taught elementary school in Bingen, AR. In June 1929 she moved to Mobile, AL where she attended Mobile Business College. During the difficult times that accompanied the Great Depression she sought and accepted work wherever it could be found. After working for a short time in Mobile she moved to Garyville, LA in 1930. She moved to New Orleans, LA in 1932 where she went to work for the U.S. Marine Hospital in New Orleans. She was later reassigned to the U.S. Marine Hospital in Savannah, GA. In November of 1933 she started her long career with the Internal Revenue Service, during which she was transferred to Washington, D.C., Little Rock, AR, Tyler, TX, and finally in March of 1939 to Dallas, TX where she worked until her retirement in 1970. She met Duncan Curry in Dallas and they were married on May 1, 1942. After Duncan returned from the war they spent the rest of their lives living in Dallas. Memorial service 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Restland Wildwood Chapel followed by interment in Restland Memorial Park.
