Freya Adelle Read's Obituary
Freya Adelle Read, Adelle, as she was known to most of us, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, September 28, 2025. After 6 months of battling, her body finally succumbed to the ravages of Chemotherapy and multiple infections, and she died at Medical City Dallas while fighting the most recent infection.
Adelle was born on September 23, 1952, at the Nazarene Unwed Mother’s Home in Pilot Point, Texas. She was adopted when she was 3 days old by her new mother and Father, Oleta and Rudolph Burquist.
She grew up and attended school in the Texas Panhandle town of Wellington, Texas. Her mother was a schoolteacher and her father was a skilled carpenter, among other talents. Her mother Oleta died when she was 15 and she moved to Mobile, Alabama to be with her father.
She graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, and a couple of years later moved to Denton, Texas to visit and live with her first cousin Jane Thompson who was attending North Texas State University. It was in Denton that she met her future husband Mark Read. She was 21 and he was 24.
They married two years later and shortly after moved from Sanger, Texas to Wolfe City, Texas. They lived there for 10 years and had their son Marshall Read in 1981. They moved to Garland, Texas in 1985 so Mark would be closer to work in the family business of Read & Read Appraisal. They remained in Garland for the rest of their lives together.
Full of energy and personality, Adelle worked at various retail arts and crafts stores, art galleries, and garden centers, including Castle Gap Jewelry, Santa Fe Dallas, Kittrell-Riffkind Art Glass, Vetro Art Glass, Redenta’s Garden Center and Northhaven Garden Center. Always creative, she became a glass bead-maker and silversmith, designing hundreds of pieces of jewelry and glass art. She was a member of the Dallas Craft Guild and the International Society of Glass Bead Makers.
She was an avid collector in different mediums but her largest collection by far was the number of people she drew into her orbit. She was a force of nature with an unforgettable smile and personality.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father, and close cousin Jane. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Mark, their son Marshall and his wife Amalia, and the two brightest stars in her life, her granddaughters Christina Read and Elia Read – and MANY friends. She is now at peace and being hugged by her mother, who has waited so long to see her again.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the National Marrow Donor Program) (https://www.nmdp.org) or Bood Cancer United (https://www.bloodcancerunited.org).
