He was a beloved professor of Paleontology and Geology, retired from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, where he inspired countless students with his passion for science and exploration.
Gary was the son of Catherine and Phil Johnson and is survived by his sister, Kathleen Smith of River Falls, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Wall.
A proud veteran, Gary enlisted in the military and served two years on the DMZ in Korea, where he was promoted to the rank of Captain and contributed to bridge construction projects. His service left a lasting impact on him and instilled a love for travel that took him to Brazil, Poland, Russia, Mexico, and memorable vacations in Grenada.
In his leisure time, Gary enjoyed hobnobbing with NASA engineers at local pubs, immersing himself in Irish music, and playing darts. He had a special fondness for bluegrass festivals and savored vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate syrup. Gary's adventurous spirit led him to his favorite pastime of digging for shark's teeth, particularly at paleontology dig sites in West Texas, which he cherished deeply.
Gary Dee Johnson will be remembered for his enthusiasm for life, love of learning, and dedication to his family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge and joy that will continue to inspire those who knew him.
