Gene William Newman
Of Plano, TX passed away peacefully January 14, 2020, from pulmonary fi-brosis. Born 11/18/1939 in Denison, TX to Jess and Louella Newman, he was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Barbara Mondrik Newman, brother Jack Newman, and grandson Chase Lazarine. Gene began an Aggie legacy. He is survived by daughters, Lori Lazarine and husband John (of New Braunfels, TX) both class of ’86, Deann Hancock & husband, Randy (of Iola, TX), both class of ’88. In addition, 4 grandchildren, Taylor Lazarine Hunter and husband Chad, both class of 2014, Christopher Lazarine, Ashlyn Hancock Biedebach, class of 2017, and husband, Jacob, and Lauren Hancock, class of 2020 as well as 2 great granddaughters, Parker Hunter and Maggie Biedebach, both future class of 2042 and 2043. Gene was a 1957 graduate of Yoe High School in Cameron, where he met the love of his life, Barbara. They were wed on July 30, 1960, and married 50 years. Newman graduated Texas A&M College, class of ’61, where he was a member of the fighting Texas Aggie Band and received a BS in Landscape Architecture. Upon graduation, Newman accepted a job in Dallas with Richard Myrick and Associates. Myrick, Newman, Dahlberg (MND) subsequently formed and Newman began to pursue the landscape construction side of the profession. In 1990, the company was restructured to become Newman, Jackson, Bieberstein (NJB) where Newman was pivotal in positions of construction administration, construction management and quality control for 20 years. Gene touched many lives during his career and some of his proudest accomplishments included DFW airport, EDS head-quarters, Dallas City Hall, Hyatt Regency Hotel and Reunion Tower, Dallas Cowboy ATT Stadium, The Ballpark in Arlington, DCCC Eastfield College Baylor Tom Landry Fitness Center and Dallas Arboretum Botanical Society Red Maple Rill Garden. Gene and Barbara were previously active members of the Richardson Jaycees and Jaycettes. Gene served as president and was selected as the Outstanding President at the State Convention. During his time in office, the Richardson Jaycees won first place community service awards in every category they entered; and for the first time in the club’s history, they won the coveted Geissenbier Memorial Award naming them the Outstanding Jaycees Club in Texas in their division. Gene and Barbara enjoyed being member of Kissin Kuzzins Square Dance Club and First Christian Church, both of Garland. Gene relocated in 2018 to Aggieland to be near family. He was well loved in his new community and enjoyed independent living. Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, 1/29, 11:30 AM at First Christian Church, Garland, TX.
