Genevieve Griffin Meek's Obituary
Genevieve Griffin Meek passed away September 9 after a year-long battle with cancer. A resident of Dallas for more than 60 years, Genevieve and her husband, Gary, moved to Granbury, Texas, in 2012 after they retired.
Genevieve was born on August 25, 1946, to William Raymond Griffin and Harriet Elizabeth Griffin in Houston, Texas.
In 1950, the family moved to Dallas, where Genevieve graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1964. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 1968. At SMU, she was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.
After college, Genevieve worked for Taylor Publishing Company as its first female graphic designer. She later joined Liquid Paper Corporation, where she was its first female art director.
An award-winning illustrator, Genevieve started her own business in the late 1970s, creating contemporary designs for advertisements, brochures and annual reports for many corporate clients. She also illustrated children’s books, including some of the About Me computer-generated series and three of the Wishbone mystery books. She was especially proud to have illustrated the Jesus Healing series of children’s books for the Christian Science Publishing Society. Throughout her work, she often used her husband and daughter as models for her illustrations.
Genevieve was the first woman elected to serve as president of the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, leading the organization from 1981 to 1982.
Her last job was as program manager in the Business Leadership Center at the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. She worked full time until 2012 and then continued part time until 2019.
Earlier this year, Genevieve completed her final work of art, with much perseverance and help with the woodworking from Gary, when she painted a large, permanent sign for a backyard fort for her grandsons, William and Griffin.
Genevieve married Gary, her high school sweetheart, on June 14, 1969. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, their daughter, Kathleen, and her husband, Jeff, hosted a two-day, old-fashioned, backyard family reunion.
Genevieve was a devoted mother to Kathleen, attending every gymnastics meet and dance competition and often staying up late when her daughter had a lot of homework to do.
Recently, Genevieve said, “I was blessed to share my life with Gary and to have a career doing what I loved. Then, when we added raising a daughter to our lives, I experienced total fulfillment.”
Genevieve was a member of the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, in Dallas and the Christian Science Society in Granbury. She also was a member of the Easy Reader Book Club in Dallas.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Gary August Meek, of Granbury and by their daughter, Kathleen Meek Davis, and her husband, Jeff Davis, and their two children, William and Griffin, of Long Beach, California.
