George was born June 29, 1931 to Jesse B & Thelma Robinson Hollon in Olney, Illinois. He married Barbara Klipsch August 12, 1951. In 1952 he graduated from Purdue University w/a BS in Civil Engineering and in 1958 he completed his Masters from the University of IL. He was a Professor at the University of IL for 7 years and worked for 10 years with WR Grace before opening Haynes, Hollon & Assoc in Dallas in 1973.
George was a Registered Professional Engineer. He was passionate about mentoring young Civil Engineers. He was active in Professional and Civic organizations, including being a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute, the Southern Division Chair for the American Council of Independent Labs, Consultant for the American Concrete Paving Assoc & member of the North Central Council of Govts, PWAC. One Dallas Centre, Dallas Museum of Art and Thanksgiving Square Dallas are- a few of his many Dallas projects.
George’s greatest joy was his 69 year marriage to Barbara, their four daughters & their families. Tamara (Harry) Murphy of Plano, TX, Jennifer (John) Sansone of San Diego, CA., Rebecca (Michael) Oliveri of Plano, TX and Michele Rager of Greeley, CO blessed George & Barbara w/11 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. His Sister-in-law, Mary Kay Klipsch, 4 nephews, 1 niece and their families also survive.
George was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his parents Jesse & Thelma Hollon, his infant brother, James, 3 son-in-laws: John Johnson, Wynn VanDenBerg & Oscar “Bud” Rager, brother in law, James Klipsch, nephew Tom Klipsch & Great Granddaughter, Payton Berard.
The friendships George shared for 20 years at Waterview Church of Christ, Richardson and then 20 years at League Street Church of Christ, Sulphur Springs, continue today. George & Barbara’s faith led them to mission trips in Russia, Kauai, Bahamas, and many states. George also enjoyed golf, checkers, dominoes, concerts and football. His unranked Purdue Boilermakers soundly beat Iowa, the #2 ranked team, on the afternoon of his passing. We’re certain they did it for George!
After living in Sulphur Springs for 20 years, George & Barbara returned to Dallas. They were inaugural members of Allen Christian Care, first living independently in a cottage & later moving to Assisted Living. George enjoyed meals, exercise, games, (especially checkers) devotionals & many, many friendships with residents in the cottages, the apartments and with the team members.
George’s service will be at Restland Dallas, Saturday, October 30; visitation with the family begins at 1:00PM and the service at 2:00 PM. Burial will be private. All of us who know George, whether it be professionally, through church, friendships or family know we’ll always be grateful for the leadership, love & faith he shared with us. Thanks be to God for George’s life!
