THE QUIET MAN Several people told me this story about Coach Morton, whom I worked for at Loo's Natatorium for ten years. Coach was a protector and larger than life man that took great pride in managing the million gallon indoor pool and complex. Coach was 60 years old on a night, that the younger boys from the Dallas Swim Club were practicing. After swim practice the boys were in the locker room changing when a boy came out and told Coach, that a man was in the locker room trying to touch them. Coach went in saw the situation and the man (undressed) mouthed off at Coach. POW! One punch and the guy was out cold! Years before, Coach had been a boxer, while in the Navy. An ambulance was called and off to Presbyterian hospital the unconscious man went. Parents were arriving to pick up kids and hearing the story. One parent was an attorney and stated that he would represent him if needed. All the parents were so happy Coach had protected their boys. The man was unconscious over 24 hours and had a broken jaw, which was wired shut! Police at the hospital checked his rap sheet and he had just been released from jail on parole. He was sent back to jail for a longer time after he was stable. Coach did not want anyone telling the story and asked everyone to please forget it, as he felt he had lost his cool. When parents told me about it later, I wanted to tell everyone, but have kept his secret. He was a hero to many people and wanted no notoriety. He was a quiet man of large frame with inner and outer strength! I was blessed to have known him. He was a John Wayne type just like "THE QUIET MAN."
My godfather, "Coach" Morton, was one of the most kind-hearted, amazing men I've ever met, and likely ever will. He has been in my life since before I was even born, and I have learned so much from him and the example he set. Namely, that you CAN choose your family, and Coach chose to make me a part of his, and I sure needed him!! I'm proud to share his name. Coach, you will be sorely missed. I love you.
