Mrs. Helen L. Pigg's Obituary
Helen L. Pigg (Flowers), 87 of Richardson, Texas passed away on May 2, 2017. Born in her grandparents’ home in Fort Worth on February 4, 1930, Helen was the daughter of Alton and Marguerite Bentley Flowers. Graduating from Vernon High School at 16, she attended North Texas State in Denton, Texas where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and her Master’s in Education. Helen’s career in elementary education thus began, first teaching in Vernon and then in Wichita Falls. It was in Wichita Falls that she met and married the love of her life, Gene Pigg in 1954. She and Gene were married for 62 years. The family relocated to Richardson in 1969 where Helen taught at Canyon Creek Elementary and at Richardson Heights Elementary schools. She helped implement the new special education curriculum for Richardson ISD. Helen taught for 31 years, retiring in 1990 and dedicating her time to grandchildren and volunteerism. The grandchildren thoroughly enjoyed Nana’s creative, playful spirit, always eager to play dominoes, cards and board games. She was a gifted seamstress and artist. Never one to sit still, Helen volunteered at Network of Community Ministries, the Richardson Adult Literacy Center and as Historian for the Richardson Retired School Personnel both at the local and district levels. Genealogy research was a favorite pastime as well as organizing family events. Helen loved her Unity of Richardson church family and her Faith Club members. Helen is preceded in death by her brother, Alton O. Flowers, and a granddaughter, Julianne Warren. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, Gene; two very devoted daughters, Becky and Sharon and sons-in-law, Keith Warren and Tom Hathaway; grandchildren, Steven Warren and wife Robyn and Elaine Hathaway and fiancé Andrew Hightower; sisters, Jane Duffie of Wichita Falls, TX and Alta Birdsong of Dunwoody, Georgia and husband Ken; sister-in-law, Georgia Seery of Socorro, New Mexico; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The family would like to thank Linah, Rose and Helen’s Vitas Hospice team who lovingly cared for her this past week. A Celebration of Life for Helen has been planned for 12:00 pm, Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Abbey Chapel at Restland Memorial Park. Rev. Jeanie Broshius King will officiate. Following the service, the family and friends will move over to the Event Center at Restland for a reception. Memorial contributions may be made to Network of Community Ministries, Richardson, TX. Arrangements are under the care of Restland Funeral Home located at 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75243.
