Henry Howard Spicer's Obituary
Henry Howard Spicer was born on April 4, 2007 in Dallas, Texas. He passed away January 13, 2023 in Mayer, Arizona.
Howard attended Alcuin School from the time he was a toddler until upper elementary school, Good Shepherd Episcopal School for middle school, Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas for his freshman year, before discovering The Orme School in Arizona where he was excited to be a boarding student. He was an academically gifted student who played tournament chess and electric guitar. He pursued soccer, football, and wrestling during his middle and high school years.
While at The Orme School, Howard discovered a love of horseback riding and equine care. He especially loved American quarter horses, who he said were like big, friendly dogs. Nothing made him happier while at Orme than riding Joker, a beautiful chestnut American quarter horse with a perfect white blaze and gentle disposition and easy manner to match Howard’s. He loved Joker and the horseman’s life so much that he didn’t mind rising before the sun to feed and care for horses.
Howard had a number of hobbies and interests that were quirky and endearing. He collected chickens of all shapes and sizes from ceramics to glassworks to signage and posters to stuffed animals to a full set of chicken China. His favorite chicken was Bob, who was crocheted especially for Howard by a teacher in his upper elementary class for Christmas. Bob was a tribute to a fictional short story that Howard had written about a purple chicken. Not surprisingly, chicken was also Howard’s favorite food. He loved it any way that it could be prepared, and he prepared it well himself because Howard had amazing kitchen skills.
Howard had an eidetic memory and an encyclopedic knowledge of random facts. He could dissect any historical film for factual inaccuracies and loved to talk about whether costuming, armor, and timelines were historically correct. He was a voracious reader who preferred a good series so that he never had to be at a loss for what his next read would be. He devoured the first six books in the Dune series by Frank Herbert in three months, which is an impressive feat given that Dune is dry and tedious. He loved manga, anime, shooting pool, board games, and being in the water. He loved fast boats, jet skis, and tubing.
Howard is predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Pok Sun Winters formerly of Dacula, Georgia. He is survived by his parents Victoria and Jeffrey Spicer, sibling McMillin Spicer, brother William Spicer, and maternal grandfather Ronald Winters all of Dallas, Texas. He is survived by his paternal
grandparents Marjory and Kent Spicer of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He is survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins in Wisconsin, Washington, and Arkansas. He is also survived by three beloved dogs, Sundae, Angus, and Hugo.
The family has chosen not to hold a service but will host a celebration of Howard’s life sometime in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Howard’s memory may be made to Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas. https://www.jesuitdallas.org/make-a-gift
