Herbert "Hugh" Tyree Jr.'s Obituary
Herbert “Hugh” Tyree, Jr. was surrounded by his loving wife and family when he went to be with his Savior and Lord on August 23, 2016 in Midlothian, Texas. Hugh was born on August 31, 1932 in Idabel, Oklahoma. Visitation will be at the church from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 29. A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 30 at Park Central Baptist Church at 7777 LBJ Freeway in Dallas. Burial services will be at 2:30 p.m. at the DFW National Cemetary. Hugh graduated from Hugo High School in Hugo, OK. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from Oklahoma State University (then known as Oklahoma A & M) and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. He also completed graduate studies at Texas Christian University and the University of California at Los Angeles and became a Certified Public Accountant. After serving for two years in the U.S. Army in Germany, Hugh met Laura Mae Moulton at Travis Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX. During their 57-year-marriage he regularly told people, “Laura was the best decision of my life.” Hugh retired from JC Penney after 30 years of service. During his tenure he did everything from sell shoes to serve as a regional accountant, senior project manager and was known for his ability to solve problems and turn unprofitable areas of the company into money making operations. He was active in Toastmaster’s and earned numerous awards and ribbons. Hugh was a loving husband and father. His love for and devotion to his church was reflected in his often spoken statement, “You can take a vacation from work and home, but not from church.” He was always actively involved in church in every place he lived. For the last 42 years he was active at Park Central Baptist Church (formerly Spring Valley Baptist) in Dallas. He served as a deacon for most of that time as well as a youth and adult Bible study teacher or department director. He also as served through benevolence, finance, building and various other ministries and teams to ensure the mission of the church was accomplished. He loved to visit people who came to the church, were in the hospital or anyone he could encourage. For many years Hugh worked out of New York and traveled there Monday-Thursday. He missed his own church on Wed. nights and its usefulness in His life so much he found a regular Baptist church to attend in Manhattan and called Metro Baptist his “Wednesday church.” Once he took his own family to New York for Thanksgiving to help participate in feeding the homeless in the basement of the church. He enjoyed participating in mission trips to minister in other places through his church. The Bible was his favorite book and “When it comes right down to it, the only thing you really need to know to succeed in life,” Hugh would say. He loved to read the Bible and to share it with others. That passion led him to be an active member of the Dallas Northeast Camp of the Gideons for 20 years where he also served as the camp treasurer as well as treasurer for the Dallas-wide Bible Blitz in 1991. After retiring from JC Penney, Hugh held several other positions doing accounting and finance jobs for both JC Penney and other companies. He served on the board of Waxahachie Prepartory Academy. He was devoted for 15 years to leading the worship at a Dallas nursing home every Thursday morning. He would help gather the patients and wheel them to the service, visit with them before and afterwards, help them find the music in the hymn books and then he would lead a devotion for them. He found tremendous joy in this volunteer ministry. Hugh loved to travel and enjoyed the “wonders of the world” God created. He had visited 16 countries. Hugh is preceded in death by his parents Rhuie Eleanor Morgan & Herbert Hugh Tyree, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Laura Moulton Tyree of Dallas and his sister Gay Ann Merchant of Waxahachie. In addition he is survived by his daughters Laura Ann Hollub and husband Alex of Midlothian, TX and Martha Tyree Clark and husband Curtis of Tallahassee, FL.
