Dr. Hw Charles Baker's Obituary
BAKER, Dr. Hw Charles (85) passed away Thursday, August 13, 2020 with loved ones at his side. Charles was born in Dallas, Texas on February 6, 1935 to Audrie and Bryan Baker. At the age of 14, Charles accepted Christ as his Savior and Lord, beginning his new life. After graduating Valedictorian from Norman Robert Crozier Technical School in 1952, Charles attended Southern Methodist University for his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering. He attained his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1962. Charles began teaching at SMU in 1956 through 1968. He married the love of his life, Barbara Anne Allen, in 1967. He became the Telecommunications Advisor for Exxon Company in 1968 through 1979. In 1980, he returned to teaching at SMU and continued through 2012. He was a Registered Professional Engineer for the state of Texas for over 50 years, having been recognized by former Governor Rick Perry, and was among the first Registered Engineers among his peers at SMU. During his tenure, he taught telecommunications, electrical engineering, and computer science and engineering, as well as developed the telecommunication and network engineering degree plan. Aside from his time in education, he devoted his life to the distribution of God's word through the Gideons International, connecting people to Christ through testimony and placing Bibles in the hands of people all over the world. He served in the Sons of the American Revolution, keeping the institutions of American freedom and true patriotism and the value of American citizenship. Dr. Baker inspired countless people during his time with us. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leta Audrie Thomason Baker, and father, Jennings Bryan Baker. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Baker, daughter Jennifer and son in law Anthony Halstead, grandsons Nicolas and Ryan of Napa, California, and daughter Rachel and son in law Christopher Barker and granddaughters Randi, Alison, and Charlotte of Dallas, Texas. A service will be held at Restland Funeral Home on August 21, 2020 at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation be made in his memory to the Gideons International, PO Box 831505 Richardson, Texas 75083.
