James P. Bevans' Obituary
James (Jim) Portus Bevans was born July 18, 1929, in San Antonio, TX and passed away quietly in Dallas on January 3, 2023. Jim grew up in a ranching and banking family in Menard, TX. While attending Menard High School, Jim was Captain of the football team and an all-district player, a member of the varsity basketball team, varsity track team, the tennis team and was a member of the Student Council and Class President. After graduating from high school in 1946, Jim moved to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University (SMU). At SMU, Jim was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and served as chapter President his junior & senior years. After graduating from SMU in 1951 with a Finance & Banking degree, Jim & his family moved to Oklahoma to start a career in ranching. In 1964, Jim & his family moved back to Dallas and settled in Highland Park to start a banking career with Republic National Bank. Through multiple banking mergers, Jim finally retired in 1997 as Senior Vice President of the Trust Department from what is now known as Bank of America.
Jim married Mary Elizabeth Capps in 1978 and together they raised a blended family of 4 sons and 3 daughters. Mary preceded Jim in death in November 2020 and Jim’s surviving children are: James Portus Bevans, Jr. of Dallas, William Hamilton Bevans of Dallas, Mark Winston Bevans and his wife Kasey of Dallas; Louise Pastorino and her husband Charles of Boerne, TX, Ruth Ann McCulloch and her husband Bob of Louisville, KY, Ted Capps and his wife Kelly of Royse City, TX, Sara Furlich and her husband Mike of Dallas, TX. Grandchildren: Shannon Morgan, Lauren Rodriguez, Elizabeth (Beth) Duenas, William Bevans, Jr. (Billy); Bailey Bevans; Blake Bevans; Margaret (Meg) Pastorino; Elizabeth (Beth) Schnacker; Colin McCulloch; Tinsley Capps; Ben Capps; Josh Capps; Sally Furlich; Rachel Furlich and Elizabeth Furlich. In addition to the grandchildren, there are 9 great-grandchildren. With such a large extended family, Jim’s favorite thing was spending time with everyone at the family Lake House on Cedar Creek Lake and the family Ranch in Richland, TX. Jim just loved spending time outdoors hunting with his sons, forming memories with grandchildren, caring for his Longhorn cattle at the ranch and serving as pancake master at the lake on Saturday mornings.
A Private Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 2:00pm at Restland Memorial Park (Good Shepherd section).
