I just heard this sad news. He was wonderful man. He and his family were our neighbors growing up. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.
Paula, I am so sorry and shocked to hear about Sonny and will keep you and your family in my prayers. Sonny was a great mentor and friend, with a heart as big as Texas. I, along with many others he mentored and befriended, will greatly miss him but his advice and friendship will live on with us forever. Rick Herrington

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Paula, Chris, Kevin and your entire family. I have known Sonny for 39 years. He was my immediate supervisor at TxDOT for seven of those years. He left a great legacy in all the projects he worked on in the Dallas area, the young engineers he mentored, and most of all his sons. I personally benefited greatly from his wit and humor, his knowledge, and his professionalism. He taught us to accomplish difficult work while having fun doing it. I was fortunate to get to reconnect with Sonny over the last three years in the consultant world. Once again, he was my mentor even though we worked for different firms. He was a true gentleman. Sonny will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Charlie & Mary Freeman

To Paula, Chris and Kevin- I am so shocked to hear of my good friend Sonny's passing – he was such an unassuming but robust life force. Sonny had a major impact in my life – a former boss, but always more of a colleague than "boss". He was the behind-the-scenes mentor for me and many other young engineers in TxDOT's Dallas District, at least five of us who later became TxDOT District Engineers or Division Directors. He showed us by example how to build cohesive teams and lead collegially. And I'll certainly miss our critiques of the latest and greatest Corvettes, a shared passion! Godspeed, Sonny James – you'll be sorely missed old friend! John P. Kelly, San Antonio
