James Richard "Rick" McCall's Obituary
James Richard "Rick" McCall, aged 78, died on April 17, 2024 in Dallas, Texas of complications following stroke. He was born on September 1, 1945 in Dallas, Texas to a proud World War II veteran James E. McCall and his wife Dorothy. He spent most of his childhood in San Antonio where he played baseball and learned to play the trumpet. He, himself was a proud American patriot and veteran. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and proudly served his country in Vietnam.
Rick's passion for education was a lifelong pursuit. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as two Masters degrees from Southern Methodist University: the first in Education and a second in Liberal Arts. He served as special-education teacher and Educational Diagnostician. His love of learning extended well into retirement and included continuing education coursework in the Orton-Gilliamham study of dyslexia. He continued volunteering, teaching, and helping children learn to read at Shelton School as well as various programs in the Dallas area throughout his retirement. Other notable works include volunteering with Literacy Achieves at East Dallas Christian Church and Scottish Rite Hospital.
When he wasn't renovating historical homes or restoring vintage cars and motorcycles, Rick loved spending time outdoors at the lake, camping, or landscaping. He had a soft spot for animals and would even sneak treats to the squirrels passing through the yard.
