Janet Jones Carr's Obituary
Janet Jones Carr has passed away, but because of her belief in the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ she is now healed and residing in heaven. Janet Jones Carr passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at her residence in Houston from respiratory complications. She was a beloved wife, a caring mother, a cherished grandmother, and a loving great grandmother. She will be remembered forever and profoundly missed as the matriarch of our family. Janet was born in Ellisville, Mississippi on June 12, 1931. Her mother was Alma Valle Vaughn of Ellisville and her father was John Travis Jones of DeKalb, Mississippi. Her paternal grandparents were Wallace Walter Jones and Mattie Lee Mosely. Her maternal grandparents were Stephen F. Vaughn and Alta Collins. In the mid-1930s the young Jones family moved with Janet to the Dallas area and made their home in Highland Park. Janet grew up there with her two younger sisters, Kathryn Jones Biggs and Marjorie Jones Anderson. Janet graduated from Highland Park High School and Southern Methodist University. In 1948 Janet married Dwight H. Benson of Dallas. The couple had one child, Dwight C. Benson. Their marriage was tragically cut short in 1955 when Mr. Benson died in a commercial airline accident while on a business trip. In 1958 Janet met and married John D. Carr of Floresville, Texas. Mr. Carr is a graduate of Floresville High School, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University Of Texas School Of Law. Janet and John had two children, Carol Lynn Carr and John D. Carr, Jr. During a long and distinguished career in the oil and gas business, Mr. Carr’s work allowed the family to travel to many exotic areas of the world and to live in several different places, including Alaska, Louisiana, and several Texas cities. The family eventually settled in Houston where they lived for several decades. Janet was a well-educated, informed, and socially active woman. She belonged to many philanthropic, civic, and hereditary organizations, including P. E. O. International, The General Society of Mayflower Descendants and its Texas and Houston Colonies, the Daughters of the American Revolution, The National Society Magna Carta Dames, and the Daughters of the Cincinnati. She attended Grace Presbyterian Church in Houston. Throughout her life, Janet gave both her time and resources to the betterment of others. Janet was an accomplished genealogist and genealogical researcher and was a published author in the field. She devoted much of her time to helping others with their own research and in finding family lineages. Janet is survived by her husband, John D. Carr, her three children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, numerous nephews and nieces, and a sister, Margie Anderson. A visitation for friends and family will be held at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX, Sunday, August 13, 2017, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at Restland on Monday, August 14, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Wildwood Chapel. A graveside service and burial will follow the funeral in the Garden of the Gospel at Restland.
