Cousin Jere, as she liked to call herself, and I were first cousins. However, her elder daughter, Susan, and I were the same age and grew up together along with Jo Ellen, Jerry's middle child, who was just a year behind Susan and me. I spent a lot of time in Jerry's home playing, spending the night and just being a kid. She ran a tight ship! When Susan, Jo Ellen & I got too rambunctious back in their room we'd hear Jerry flip flopping down the hall, "Girls!" As a child, I thought Jerry wore flip flops year round! She and my mother could drink pots and pots of coffee while smoking piles of Salems while the girls and I played. As we grew older, it was like Jerry was one of us. Very present. She was everywhere!
